Visiting London in June? Don't Miss the Changing of the Guard

London is great to visit this time of year - there is plenty to do and the weather is great. As you plan the itinerary for your upcoming visit there is one that you mustn't forget to include - The Changing of the Guard. This is an annual event that takes place every year in June at Buckingham Palace. The event is completely free and anyone can stand outside the palace and enjoy the event. Make sure to get there early though - it is a popular event and attracts quite a crowd.

So what is it and why is it important? The Queen has to be guarded at all times, and the soldiers who get the job done are called the Queen's Guard. They are drawn from the active duty soldiers of the Household Division's Foot Guards who are stationed at St. James Palace.

The event itself is simple and quick - the Old Guard assembles outside the Buckingham Palace at 10.30 am on June 22nd and is then joined by the St. James Palace Old Guard at 10.45 am. The New Guard - the one that will take over the responsibilities of guarding the Queen - arrives at 10.45 am from Wellington Barracks where they are handed over the responsibility of making sure that the Palace is safe at all times. Every soldier is dressed in traditional red (including the fancy hats that you see on TV) and the whole event is accompanies by beautiful music.

If you miss the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace you can catch the one at Windsor Castle which takes place several times a year. You can also catch the Changing of The Queen's Life Guard and this one is great for tourists because it takes place every day. You can see a full schedule for all Changing of the Guard events on the Household Division website.
